To the participants and helpers with this
weekend's picnic, I want to say BIG THANKS!
To those unable to come, let me fill you in!
At about 2:00 the group started coming. It was
a gorgeous day. There were some wrinkles in the process (of course), but
after we got the table cloths to stay down, and the tent erected, and the
food laid out, we were only about 20 minutes "behind".
We ate and welcomed guests as they
continued to arrive. Andy Gildea counted 62 guests at one point. It was a
few less than I'd hoped, but pretty good just the same.
All the speakers came. At around 2:45, we
had the five governor candidates share and take questions. In speaking
order they were: Pat Anderson, Leslie Davis, Tom Emmer, Bill Haas, and
Marty Seifert. We then took a break for about 15 minutes before finishing
up the second half with the municipal candidates. They spoke in the order
of Michael Katch, Kris Broberg, and Kim Vlaisavljevich. (They are all in
SD 60 by the way! Wards 7, 13, and 10.) Finally Bob Carney spoke up as a
mayoral candidate seeking Republican endorsement and a bit later Papa John
Kolstad arrived to give his stump speech about his mayoral aspirations.
(Yes, he stood on a stump. I wish I would've thought of that. Oh well,
that's why he's the candidate~
It was a nice event. Things went well and
we got an idea of who all these candidates are.
But now I want to really focus on getting
the word out to the public about how their "auto DFL" voting trends have
negatively affected the city. We just heard word about the graduation and
test-passing ratings of Minneapolis Schools. Rates are hovering at around
50%! That's a TON of failing students getting pumped out into society each
year with a low chance for success. Regarding city finances, pension funds
for municipal employees has now reached dire proportions and projections
spell severe economic trouble for Minneapolis and the citizens on the hook
to pay. We in SD 60 really need to educate the city about these issues and
also, why Minneapolis Republicans are the ones to help.
In summary, it was a fun day at the park
and people really enjoyed meeting the candidates. There's a lot we can and
will do. Be part of it?
your chair,
-Brandon!
