Below is an eyewitness account of a
town hall meeting held by U.S. Representative Keith Ellison on August 8th
in southeast Minneapolis at a Lake Street East
union hall:
As I'd indicated earlier, I attended the Town
Hall Meeting this evening in southeast Minneapolis at a union hall on Lake
Street East. I've never been to a rabid moonbat meet such as this before.
I was discreet, preferring to keep my affiliations to myself and I did not
strike up a conversation with anyone.
A small panel was assembled to shape the discussion of the meet. It
consisted of State Senator Becky Lourey, a fellow named Rick Hanson of an
organization that calls itself Military Families Speak Out and a Somali
woman named Shukri Adan of the Department Of Peace. Radical left wing city
councilman of Ward 10, Ralph Remington was in attendance in the audience
as an observer.
There were approximately 200 bodies at this meet and most of them had no
public statements. So while it is possible...possible...that some of them
were old school Democrats or independents, I couldn't help but notice that
the cheer was almost deafening and seemingly unanimous when it was
proclaimed by a fellow named Colin of the Green Party that impeachment
proceeding must be pressed against President Bush for his genocidal and
criminal acts against humanity.
The sheer hatred and venom coming from these folk was unbelievable. One
leftist after another stood on a soapbox trying to "out radical" the
previous speaker. I would say that Rick Hanson of Military Families Speak
Out was perhaps the most hateful of all. According to Mr. Hanson, our
"kids" in Iraq understand that their lives have been reduced to less than
nothing as they are killed in Mr. Bush's war as intentional victims.
Oddly, Keith Ellison looks a little less radical compared to these Greens
and disgruntled DFLers. Someone from the Green Party took Ellison to task
for a declaration he'd made that leveled the charge of genocide against
President Ahmadinejad of Iran. It was charged that when Ellison partook in
that reckless and irresponsible statement, he was giving the Bush regime
carte blanche permission to invade.
On at least three occasions, Ellison had to head off the attacks by
imploring everyone to respect everyone's opinions.
Seeing the mood in the room, I decided, with no regret, that I would not
ask any questions or make any statements whatsoever. I chose to remain as
invisible as possible, take notes and snap a picture or two. What would be
the point of a center-right Republican making a statement or asking a
pointed question? Ellison is against the war and I think it is clear that
he will continue to be against the war even if General Petraeus reports
that the Surge is working. Ellison and this rabble claim that there is no
military solution, we need to bring the troops home and the sooner the
better.
This event was conducted in stark contrast to Republican events I am used
to. Though the American flag was displayed in the room, no Pledge Of
Allegiance was called. When a speaker completed his address to the room,
Keith Ellison, rather than shaking hands, would administer a "high five"
slap. A sense of dread lingered in the room. These people are convinced
that America is evil and they are ashamed of its legacy. I find it very
difficult to imagine they might be persuaded otherwise.
UPDATE: I've been rethinking this Town
Hall Meeting. As I said earlier, I've never been to anything like this
before. Upon reflection, I think the next one I attend I will be better
prepared. A town hall meeting is supposed to be a forum for citizens to
voice their opinions so that their elected representative will become
informed as to the wishes of his/her constituents. Likewise, it is a forum
for citizens to learn how their representative sees his constituency and
reports on his/her actions in Washington.
With that in mind, I feel it is my responsibility to speak up.
In my opinion, while holding a town hall forum is commendable on the part
of Ellison, the reason he holds these is in order to provide cover for his
actions. Come election time, he cannot be charged with not listening to
the district.
While I believe I have a duty to speak up with my opinion, I will not be
so naive as to think my views will be taken to heart by Rep. Ellison.
